Jo Koons
Jo Koons enters her second season as Abilene Christian’s head softball coach in 2025-26 after leading the Wildcats to major strides in her debut year. Under her guidance, ACU improved its Western Athletic Conference record from 8-18 in 2024 to 11-13 in 2025, exceeding preseason expectations by finishing tied for fourth after being picked eighth. The Wildcats also returned to the WAC Tournament for the first time since 2022, playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules, including 13 games against top-50 RPI opponents such as Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, and Oregon.
ACU won four conference series, matching its total from the previous two seasons combined, including a sweep of Southern Utah and consecutive series victories over Utah Valley, Tarleton State, and California Baptist. Koons also coached standout pitcher Lina Russo to All-WAC Second Team honors after she led the league in innings pitched and ranked third in strikeouts. Russo earned two WAC Pitcher of the Week awards, while third baseman Miranda Lista claimed WAC Player of the Week recognition. Another milestone came on April 2, when a record-setting crowd of 1,261 fans filled Poly Wells Field for a matchup against No. 14 Texas Tech.
Koons became ACU’s fifth head coach in June 2024 after two seasons as an assistant at UT Arlington, where she served as defensive coach and recruiting coordinator. Her coaching journey includes stops at Stanford, Colorado Christian, Lassen College, her alma mater, Utah State, Oregon, and Longwood. Notably, she helped Oregon rank among the nation’s top 20 defensive teams in 2020 and 2021, and at Longwood, she developed Jaden Pone into the 2022 Big South Freshman of the Year during a 34-win season.
A former four-year starter at shortstop for Utah State (2012-15), Koons finished her career with a .269 batting average, a .340 on-base percentage, and 10 triples, ranking fifth in program history. She earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Utah State in 2015 and a master’s in organizational leadership from Colorado Christian in 2018.
