1. What problems do you see with high school basketball analytics today as an industry?
Not enough coaches use analytics and know how to use them. The ones that do only care about basic stats that don't tell the whole story. they also don't take advantage of stats that will help them in what they do and their philosophy.
2. What problems do you have with the analytical products that are available to you (ie. HUDL, Krossover, excluding E3 Hoops)?
Hudl and Krossover are great and to many coaches are more than enough. Their video breakdown is huge and how easy it is to make clips and reels for players. For me personally, they don't provide enough stats and tailer my stats for my program. I have to go in and tag stuff and their are no one on one communication that can help build a analytics program built for what I'm trying to do.
3. How comfortable do you feel with the analytics that are provided by HUDL/Krossover and what is your level of expertise of basketball analytics?
I feel very comfortable with what they provide and I feel that I have a good level of expertise in basketball analytics. They base their main stats on the four factors to win basketball games that was introduced by Dean Oliver. I can help you come up with different 4 factors for each style. Their is more than enough stats and I can see why they are successful. However, they could do a lot more.
4. What did E3 Hoops Analytics provide that Krossover/HUDL did not and how did that help you during the season?
The personal communication and the understanding of building a anaytical program based on what a coach needs. The extra stuff was amazing as well. I felt like I was an NBA coach with all the information. If a parent ever wanted to sit down and discuss playing time, a coach can show them detailed reasons why. I like it to show the team what we are doing and what we aren't doing well in detail. I like how I can come up with stats that is usually not tracked and you chart it. 5 man lineup were huge for me, tracking help defense was very good to see, screens, basic actions that were tracked were great. I really was amazed at all the information and blown away with the whole picture you can write with getting this information.
5. List anything that you feel that you are missing, would like to see in the future, or improvements from any of the analytical services at the high school level.
1. To compete with Hudl and Krossover you need the video side that you are in the process of adding.
2. I would come up with a survey to ask coaches of what their philosophy is, Offense they run, defense they run, stats that they want tracked, and come up with a basic breakdown and come up with factors for them. Come up with a basic stat sheet to cover this for them and a basic easy to follow front page with their logo. Then on the 2nd page put where they rank in different stats against the other teams you cover. Then I would get them all the other stats, most don't understand it. I would also come up with this on your main page a ranking of all the teams that you cover and where they rank in each stats. This might be huge and could help steal Hudl and Krossover coaches over to you.
3. Send them notes on some trends that are causing them to win or lose and some things you noticed. Like in they are a team that pushes the ball in transition but you noticed that their pointer per a possession was higher when they ran some offense or their defense was better when they ran offense so they could rest would be very helpful.
4. Make the stats sheets a little more pretty (Make it so they can follow and feel comfortable) and what I mean is that most coaches when reading will be overwhelmed and especially your target audience of high school coaches. On the front page have their top stuff and have their logo and record and something good that they can sell to their team. Their own 4 factors. where they rank in the nation once you can get that information. 2nd page have your thoughts and expertise that you find on whats working and not and something to try.then send the rest of the stats and highlight some areas for them. Coaches will eat this up. I came up with this based on when I shared my stats with my assistants they couldn't follow it, but they aren't into stats. I loved it and when I showed it to other coaches that were huge in stats, they were blown away.
I hope this helps and always available to discuss anything and would help to help your company grow. Thanks so much for all your help this year and good luck.
