Dear Prospective College Basketball Coach:
Here is my advice to you:
FIRST--Determine where you are on the scale from 1-10 in terms of wanting to do everything it takes to become a college coach; 10 being the highest.
SECOND--If you are an 8, 9, or 10……….see #3.
THIRD--Review your budget and what you are spending your money on. Do you pay for things every month that get in the way of you being a college coaching position?
I challenge you to take a good look at these 4 items:
Example #1---Cable TV can run from $30-$120/month. There is $40/month right there. Young coaches will say, “I have to have cable!” At least two months of mentoring equal one month of Direct TV.
My response is; “Then cable is more important than becoming a college basketball coach!” Period!
Example #2—Car payments—I tell young coaches that for TWO average car payments, you could invest in College Coach Now for ONE YEAR!
My response is: Take the bus, buy a bike, walk, get a ride, or take a taxi.
Example #3—Food—For the price of one dinner out and a large pizza you could be pursuing your dream of becoming a college basketball coach! Which is more important?
My response is: Feed your career first!
Example #4—Borrow money—The price of a college education is hundreds of thousands of dollars. Student loans are commonplace but hopefully not necessary for you.
My response is: How much is an NCAA coaching career worth?
My mentoring goal is to challenge my mentees and push them toward their goals. Sometimes they find out that their goals are nothing more than wishful thoughts. But those who truly have that burning desire to get to the NCAA basketball sidelines, being pushed is what they want and most eventually accomplish all of their goals.
My hope is that you will read this and do some self-reflection to determine where you really stand in terms of making college coaching your career. I’d be glad to answer any questions you may have at any time.
Thanks for your time and interest in Elite Coach Mentoring with CoachRB,
Randy Brown
