Grinnell point guard Jack Taylor scored 138 points on Tuesday to shatter the N.C.A.A. scoring record for a single game.
Taylor, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore, made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 over all from the field and added 7 free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes. Grinnell, a Division III college, clobbered Faith Baptist Bible, 179-104, in Grinnell, Iowa.
“It felt like anything I tossed up was going in,” Taylor said.
Rio Grande’s Bevo Francis set the previous N.C.A.A. scoring record for a single game with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954.
Under Coach David Arseneault, Grinnell has led the nation in scoring for 17 of the past 19 seasons while ranking first nationally in 3-point shooting for 15 of the past 19 seasons. But no player has had a night quite like the one Taylor had on Tuesday.
He started the game slowly, but his coaches figured the way to get him on track was to keep shooting. He had 58 points at halftime, and then he got hot. He made 32 shots in the second half, averaging four points a minute.
“I don’t think reality has set in yet,” Taylor said.
