How you close camp will often be how people remember the experience.  I had a set close routine that would thank the campers, thank the parents, give some inspiration, hand out the awards and then give the public service announcements about when one had to leave the dorm, receive their leftover camp bank money ...return keys and linens ...etc.

1) Make sure someone is locking up and looking out for the equipment

2) Start the cleanup process early, don't release everyone and then have to clean up by yourself the dorms, the gym ....etc

3) It's an uphill battle but make sure the staff stays until camp is over.  Don't give out payroll until after camp.

4) Try to give the campers a workout program or something they can use on departure.  It's a good thing to show parents to let them know you are serious about their child's development.

5) Post-camp, assess.  I would meet with my full-time staff and categorize the coaches.  I looked for three elements 1) they brought campers 2) they were stars on the court 3) people liked them...they were the glue guys either to the staff or campers that enhanced the experience during the camp week.  If someone isn't checking those boxes, you need to replace them.

6) Have your staff assess the camp, give an after-camp survey to your staff to ask for suggestions.  Be careful, you will hear some things you don't want to hear but if a few items come in that you can use to make camp better - it's worth it.

7) We did all-stars and awards and truthfully, it brought out as many negatives as positives so understand that going in.
