    JD Allen - Option Routes

     view description
    • The video features a presentation by Coach Jonathan Allen, the Offensive Coordinator at West Mesquite High School. He discusses building an offense through choice and option routes.

Introduction of Coach Allen and Staff
      • Coach Allen is introduced as the offensive coordinator at West Mesquite.
      • He mentions his mentors, Head Coach Stephen Jackson and Danny Cobbin, the head coach at Dallas Samuel.
      • His staff present include Trey Allen, the offensive line coach (a "Tech University of Texas legend"), and former assistants, Coach McGill (now the offensive coordinator at Dallas Samuel) and Coach Harris (now the running back coach at Dallas Samuel).
      • Coach Allen started his high school coaching career at DeSoto High School, where he graduated. Before that, he coached college basketball for four years at Brookhaven Community College in Dallas.
The Offense: Choice and Option Routes

The philosophy behind using option and choice routes is that they:
      • Provide big play opportunities on every play.
      • Allow the offense to take advantage of mismatches, often by isolating the best player on one of the defense's weaker players.
      • Force the defense to prepare and defend the entire field, particularly by using wide splits with wide receivers to spread the defense horizontally and attack them vertically.
      • Make "shot plays" easy to identify (e.g., confirming a one-on-one matchup with the corner, or if the middle of the field is open or closed).
      • Are simple for the kids to execute; eliminating the "gray area" allows the players to line up correctly, know what to do, and play faster.
Distinction Between Option and Choice Routes
      • Options have three possibilities: running vertical, shutting it down, or taking the bender.
      • Choices have two possibilities: taking the vertical route or shutting it down.
      • Coach Allen uses a car analogy: an option offers three cars (Toyota Tundra, '87 Cutlass, or '64 Mustang), but a broke teacher/coach only has two choices (a beat-up Honda or a truck).
Rules for Vertical Option Wide Receiver Routes

The rules for vertical option wide receivers are:
      1. Play fast and avoid being indecisive.
      2. Use the best release; if possible, run by the defender and "blow the top off". If the defensive back (DB) is playing press coverage, use a different release to get vertical fast.
      3. If the DB is bailing and the receiver cannot run by, shut the route down at 10 yards.
      4. If the receiver cannot run by the corner and the corner is playing outside leverage, the receiver can take the post route.
      Receiver Rules Based on Tagging
      • If a receiver is aligned outside of the tagged receiver, they run the "Cowboy" route (a checkdown route with an outside release, running 8 yards deep and 4 yards from the sideline).
      • If a receiver is aligned inside of the tagged receiver, they run the "Occupy" route, attempting to draw the attention of the safety and keep the safety from getting over the top of the outside receiver.
      • If a receiver is aligned away from the tagged receiver, they run a 10-yard shutdown route, which is the checkdown to the single side.
      Practice Schedule

The choice and option routes are practiced every day. The practice schedule incorporates a "drill vertical passing" time in blue, where the team works on fast repetitions, RPO (Run-Pass Option) stuff, and option and choice routes. The staff is advised to put a wide receiver coach on each side to give the kids live reads for their options and choices.

      Program Philosophy

The program's statement, developed by the head coach, is: "Building leadership capacity amongst coaches and kids so that they take ownership and growth of the program and their lives". Coach Allen emphasizes that the true measure of a coach is not the X's and O's but "the ability to motivate and grow people to the best versions of themselves". He aims to be known as a great man of God, character, and integrity who is always willing to help others, rather than just a good football coach.
