    Short Hops

     view description
    • Who: Especially useful for middle infielders but can be done by all infielders.

What/Why: A drill used to get infielders comfortable with receiving the ball on the short hop. Most fielders tend to want to get a long hop vs a short as it is typically easier to catch. As the game progresses time may dictate that the long hop may not be available, and to record an out it may be necessary to take the ball on the short hop.

Where: On field with a partner or off the wall if a partner is not available.

When: Usually done pre season but can be done in season as needed.

      How: Demo in video

Coaching cues: Players will get into a fielding position and have the glove hand out in front, but not fully outstretched. The ball should land just in front of the players feet, they will then with one hand get behind it and play through it. We want to use one hand because often times the play is made one handed, especially on the move. When supervising this drill make sure players do not lift the torso up, instead encourage them to stay down and play through the ball.
