Lesson 8:
Bounce Tempo Instructional
Bounce Tempo
During the 2011 season, I was able to see Boise State play Toledo live. I focused on how Boise was able to run uptempo offense from a huddle and how much they shifted and motioned. As a play caller that has used shifting and motioning often, I know lot goes into both thinking about the movement wanted and getting it called. Instead of putting it in my hands, I decided to put the responsibility in the players hand by creating a procedure called “Bounce.”
Bounce will be used to force the defense to
(1)recognize, (2)communicate, and (3)adjust in a very short period of time. This adds three opportunities for the defense to make pre-snap errors.
We set up some general rules for our players, and after that we tell them to be creative and keep the defense off balance. We always will shift the strength from one side into the other. The QB will say “shift” to move personnel and then begin the full cadence.
We are always running to align quickly and get set in an initial formation. Skill players will have basic rules which will allow them to easily align in one formation and shift to another.
