Lesson 12:
Defending Qk Hitch (read)

There is one more thing I need to talk about and that is Quick Hitch. Failure is the best teacher of them all, and it helped me to quickly figure out I needed to tweak our 2 Read coverage. We played a team in our first game of 2015 with a really good WR who ended up starting as a Freshman at Marshall. He had about 150 on us and half of that was from Qk Hitch.
The Achilles heel of Defensive Coordinators is their aversion to dying a slow death, and I am no different. We had to change our 2 Read rules on the fly because we were getting our butts kicked on one of the simplest plays in football. This is what we did: If the CB saw #1 run the Qk Hitch, he triggered immediately and yelled "Screen! Screen!" and the Safety would play 2 vertical if they ran the Screen & Go. I worried about teaching them this exception to their coverage rules but they adjusted very well to this new rule.
It is important to teach the Safety that he cannot fly in and help out on the tackle vs Qk Hitch because teams can throw the Screen & Go as well as throwing the Qk Hitch to 1 as a backwards pass and then have the WR throw it to 2. You have to overcoach their reaction to these plays until your guys can react to them with machinelike perfection.

I will show you how to install 2 Read coverage with film of how to defend the possible route combinations, allowing you to defend the Screen/RPO Game as well as anything in the Passing Game. 2 Read allows Defenses to read the release of the #2 WR and to adapt the coverage to play as Quarters or Cover 2, depending on what the #2 WR does. This gives us the best of both worlds and allows our DBs t...
