Lesson 2:
Stationary Ball handling Using the Dribble
Once our players become comfortable with the ball without the dribble, we will begin to use the dribble.
This goes for all levels, but if you are working with beginners working your way from no dribble to using the dribble is important.
When you are teaching how to dribble emphasize using the fingertips. Not batting the ball with palms.
The fingertips are critical for all basketball skills.
Dribbling
Passing
Shooting
Your teaching points again are:
1, Keep knees bent
2. Work with eyes up once they get comfortable with the ball. Especially when working with their weak hand
3. Go Game Speed
Players can spend a lot of time with the stationary ballhandling drills in a small area without the need for a big gym. Make sure your players have a ball they can practice with when they are not at school or not with a team. The game is great because of the team component, but also great because skills can be worked on anytime and anywhere.
So make sure they have a ball they can use outdoors or indoors. The more time they spend dribbling the ball when they are not at the gym will allow them to improve once they are at the gym.
