What sport science says about the long jump take-off

     view description
    • Performance in the long jump is dependent on a fast horizontal velocity at the end of the approach and take-off technique. The take-off phase of the long jump has two key aspects: the take-off angle and the take-off mechanism.

      • An appropriate take-off technique involves the take-off foot being ahead of the center of mass at touchdown to be in a low position at the beginning of take-off.
      • The jumper pivots up and over the take-off foot, and at the same time, the take-off leg quickly flexes as well as extends.
      • Maximizing the flight distance is accomplished by optimizing take-off velocity and the take-off angle.
      • The take-off leg should be approximately 60 - 65° to the ground.
