Lesson 9:
First Trap Fundamentals (Red Press)
This lesson breaks down the first trap in the full-court press, emphasizing positioning, pressure, and mentality. Players learn to attack the ballhandler with intensity—using foot-to-foot alignment, tracing the ball, and closing space to force mistakes. The on-ball defender, typically the team’s best athlete, is coached to disrupt rhythm, apply vocal pressure, and get into the opponent’s head. Teammates rotate to cover strong and weak sides, denying outlets and sealing passing lanes. The drill builds habits of deflections, tips, and steals, creating easy scoring opportunities out of defensive pressure.
