Andy Toole: Competitive Practice Drills for Game Ready Players

Description

Build a more competitive, game-ready practice with drills that develop basketball skills while reinforcing the way your team wants to play.

In this on-court clinic, learn a practical progression for turning warmups and short practice segments into purposeful work on defense, finishing, passing, screening, transition, and rebounding. Each drill adds game-like pressure—competition, time limits, scoring goals, communication, or live reads—so players practice making decisions as well as executing skills.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Defensive screening warmups: Use a few minutes to rehearse footwork, coverage, positioning, and communication around common screens.

  • Competitive finishing and transition drills: Run Sideline Layups and Ohio State Layups to train sprinting, passing, outlet decisions, and finishing at game pace.

  • Four-on-three and Bison Passing: Challenge players to get open, reverse the ball, handle pressure, maintain spacing, and communicate.

  • Screen to Score: Teach screening timing, catches, curls, rejects, slips, and defensive coverage within a competitive format.

  • Closest Corner: Give players a clear plan for saving loose balls near the sideline while maintaining transition organization.

  • Two-on-one and two-on-two transition: Help players recognize and use an advantage quickly, then recover and compete through the next possession.

  • Live rebounding responsibilities: Apply the “UConn” rule so players pursue every shot, including makes, and finish the possession.

Coach also shares ways to adapt the drills to different systems and age groups. The result is a flexible practice toolkit for creating energy, sharpening fundamentals, and preparing players for the decisions and effort the game demands.
