Phil Martelli Jr: Developing Complete Players

Description

Great offensive execution starts with players who can finish, make shots, and read the defense. In this on-court clinic, Coach Martelli demonstrates how to build those skills into everyday practice while reinforcing your team’s offensive system.

From attacking closeouts to recognizing backdoor opportunities, this course connects individual development with the spacing, movements, and decisions players need in games. Learn adaptable drill progressions that develop technique, introduce defensive reads, and give players ownership of their improvement.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Closeout attacks and finishing: Teach players to catch on the move, attack baseline or middle, and finish with balance off two feet.

  • Footwork through traffic: Develop spin backs, pro pivots, and changes of pace that help players protect the ball and finish when defenders cut off their drives.

  • The Kentucky Drill: Combine open-floor ball handling with creative finishes, including opportunities for players to practice their own go-to moves.

  • Fifty and Five Shooting: Build competitive shooting workouts with measurable goals, tracked results, and variations that fit your practice time and players’ abilities.

  • Cutting and passing reads: Teach corner cuts, dive-to-45 cuts, lift-and-go backdoors, and wrap cuts—with attention to timing, spacing, and pass placement.

  • Progressing to defensive reads: Move from breakdown drills with minimal or no defense into situations where players choose their actions based on how they are guarded.

Throughout the session, Coach Martelli explains how short, focused development periods can reinforce your offense throughout the season. Coaches will leave with practical drills and teaching cues for developing players who can attack advantages, make decisions, and turn offensive opportunities into baskets.
