The architect behind rapid turnarounds at A&M-Corpus Christi and Western Kentucky is prepared to do the same at Oklahoma State. Steve Lutz was named the 21st head coach in Cowboy Basketball history in April, 2024. The 51-year old has been to the NCAA tournament in each of his first three seasons as a head coach, posting a 69-35 record, including an 8-0 mark in conference tournaments. He won back-to-back Southland Conference Championships at A&M-Corpus Christi while ending a 15-year NCAA tournament drought and ended a similar stretch at Western Kentucky by winning the Conference USA Championship. A class act, on and off the court, Lutz has twice been named a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, given to the coach who achieves success while displaying strong moral character. Known as one of college basketball’s hardest workers, Lutz spent more than two decades as an assistant under four different national coach of the year winners, including Creighton’s Doug McDermott and Purdue’s Matt Painter. His association with the latter makes him a member of the famous Henry Iba and Eddie Sutton coaching trees. The San Antonio, Texas native is a 1995 Texas Lutheran graduate and earned a masters degree from Incarnate Word two years later. He and his wife, Shannon, have three children: Caroline, McKenna and Jackson.
