Head coach Terrence “TJ” Johnson is entering his second season at the helm of the Texas State men’s basketball program and his seventh overall season with the Bobcats. In his first season, Johnson led Texas State to its first Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship and was named the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year as well as the 2021 NABC Division I District 23 Coach of the Year.  

 Johnson has worked with some standout players during his career, most notably Langston Galloway of the Detroit Pistons who played collegiately at St. Joseph’s. He went on to be selected by the New York Knicks and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for the 2014-15 season. During his coaching career, Johnson also conducted individual workouts and coached players like McDonald's All-American and current Cleveland Cavaliers Jarret Allen (Texas), Galen "G" Robinson (Houston) who plays for the Austin Spurs (NBA G-League), Alex Hobbs (Boise State), Jarrey Foster (SMU), and former Bobcats Nijal Pearson, who is the program’s all-time leading scorer.  

Johnson, born in New Orleans, La., grew up in the close-knit community of Sebastopol, La. located in St. Bernard Parish. As the son of a basketball coach, Johnson was taught the fundamentals of basketball and instilled with the values of perseverance, dedication, and teamwork.
