Join Coach Valerie Huizar, the ninth women’s basketball coach at St. Mary’s University, for an engaging exploration of stagger action—an innovative offensive strategy designed to create confusion for the defense and generate high-quality scoring opportunities. Throughout the session, Coach Huizar will share her extensive experience, including her successful stints as an assistant coach at Louisiana Lafayette and head coach at Louisiana State University Shreveport, where she consistently led teams to national tournament appearances. Participants will learn how to implement stagger actions effectively within various offensive systems, including dribble drive, Princeton, and ball screen offenses.

Coach Huizar became the ninth women's basketball coach in St. Mary's history on June 1, 2022, returning to her hometown of San Antonio. In addition to graduating from O’Connor High School, Huizar also spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant for the Rattlers and also served as an assistant coach across town at Our Lady of the Lake University from 2012-14. Huizar joined the Rattlers from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, where she was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator from 2017-22. The Ragin’ Cajuns made at least the semifinals in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament three of the last four seasons she was on the staff. Louisiana ranked first in the Sun Belt and 13th nationally in field-goal percentage (45.5%) in 2021-22, with Huizar serving as the offensive coordinator for the team. Huizar also was the head coach at Louisiana State University Shreveport for two seasons, where they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament both seasons (2014-16). Also, before her time at OLLU from 2012-14, she was an assistant coach at Tyler Junior College, ranking among the top 25 in the nation in her one year with the team (2011-12).
