The Coach
Jason Bachtel is an American football coach with a distinguished career across both collegiate and high school levels. In January 2024, he was appointed as the head football coach at Houston Christian University (HCU), following a successful tenure as the team's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023.
During his inaugural season as offensive coordinator at HCU, Bachtel played a pivotal role in achieving the program's first winning season. Under his guidance, the Huskies' offense ranked second in the Southland Conference for scoring. The running game led the conference, averaging 158.4 yards per game, with multiple players achieving significant rushing milestones. The passing attack was equally formidable, averaging 209.3 yards per game and accounting for 15 touchdowns. Notably, wide receiver Karl Reynolds earned first-team all-conference honors, and offensive lineman Christian Hood was a second-team selection.
Before joining HCU, Bachtel served as the head coach at Howard Payne University (HPU) from 2021 to 2022, leading the Yellow Jackets to consecutive 7-3 seasons. His tenure marked a period of offensive excellence, with the team averaging 489.45 yards of total offense and 38.4 points per game.
Bachtel's coaching career also includes significant high school experience in Texas. In 2020, as the offensive coordinator at Argyle High School, he contributed to the team's perfect 16-0 record and the 4A Division I State Championship. His offense averaged 48.1 points and 444.1 total yards per game.
From 2011 to 2016, he was the head coach at Scurry-Rosser High School, achieving a 32-32 overall record and earning district coach of the year honors in 2013 after leading the team to a 12-1 record—the best in school history. He graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in History and is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Administration at Lamar University.
