Jason Gelber - Achieving your Coaching Dream Job Through Perseverance...
by Southern California Football Coaches AssociationDescription
Do you want to get your dream coaching job at the high school, college, or NFL team of your choice? Well, you've come to the right place! In this course, Coach Jason Gelber reveals his methods of paving the way to new coaching jobs. He speaks heavily on making connections with people in any way possible whether it is taking a lower position, meeting them at camp, connecting via social media, attending clinics, or just making a simple phone call, connections are the key.
There are a few things to consider when you're trying to climb the coaching ladder. You have to know what level you want to coach, know what you want (for now), and your definition for being a successful coach. Applying these three things to your coaching career will surely bring you to the path of success
He then goes on to talk about his time at USC as a student coach. It was the first call of many in his life and he took it and ended up getting a full-ride scholarship his senior year for helping out the coaching staff. He also mentions you need to go above and beyond for your head coach in any situation not only to get on his good side for future recommendations but also to help make your team more successful. After his senior year, he sent letters to try to intern or get a job for any NFL team.
After making a connection with someone at USC who was a former player for the Raiders, this connection helped him get a job with the Raiders. He spent 5 years with them and learned a lot about business, resources, and having the right connections that you can only learn from this course!
After coaching for the Raiders, with the connections he made, he got a job at the Univerisity of San Diego as the Defensive Line Coach and Equipment Manager.
More coaching opportunities opened up at USC and Coach Gelber had a great relationship with the incoming Defensive Coordinator. He called the Defensive Coordinator up and the new Head Coach "owed the Defensive Coordinator one". So Coach Gelber got another coaching job from his connections. He also mentions that when an opportunity arises, always say YES. You can always deny a job later but if you are hesitant or deny the job, then someone else will surely take it.
Next, He went to Occidental College so he could coach on the field. When he was at USC he was an off-the-field coach. He transitioned from coaching at a D1 school to a D3 school. He had the opportunity to coach at another D1 school, but he received the call the night before his wedding. He emphasizes "what are you willing to give up". It worked out in his favor as he has been married for a happy 20 years.
Then he got a job as a Defensive GA at the University of Minnesota. The rest of the course speaks more on his life stories and heavily emphasizes connections. If you are a coach who wants to learn how to get your dream coaching job, then this course is a must!
