Chapin came to Cheney in 2022 after a successful tenure at the University of Sioux Falls, where he served as associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach. During his time at Sioux Falls, Chapin's offensive strategies propelled the team to impressive rankings in scoring, total yards per game, and passing yards. Under his leadership, the Cougars consistently performed well, achieving a winning record throughout his four seasons and making notable playoff appearances. Chapin's coaching prowess was evident in the development of players like Trey Pipkins, who was drafted into the NFL, and Thuro Reisdorfer, a nominee for the prestigious Harlon Hill Award.

Before his role at Sioux Falls, Chapin gained experience coaching at various levels, including UC Davis, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Adrian College. His coaching journey started at the high school level in Michigan before transitioning to collegiate coaching, where he achieved significant success, including conference championships, playoff appearances, and the development of award-winning players. Originally from Troy, Michigan, Chapin's coaching career showcases a dedication to strategic excellence and player development, making him a valuable addition to the coaching staff at Cheney.
