Joe Susan is in his fifth season back on the Rutgers football staff in 2024, serving as special assistant to the head coach. With over 40 years of collegiate coaching experience, including nine years as head coach at Bucknell, Susan brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Scarlet Knights. His extensive history with Rutgers includes a previous nine-year stint on Greg Schiano's staff, where he contributed to five consecutive bowl appearances and four bowl championships. Susan's tenure has been marked by notable achievements, including helping Rutgers secure a winning season in 2023, capped by a victory in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. He also served as interim tight ends coach for part of the 2022 season and played a key role in the program's development during the challenging 2020 season.

Susan initially served as the offensive line coach before transitioning to tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. He was instrumental in securing highly-touted recruiting classes, including a top 25 group in 2009, and mentored standout players like TE Clark Harris, who went on to have a 15-year NFL career. Susan's contributions have been integral to Rutgers' success, particularly in Big Ten action, where the team achieved several milestones, including multiple road victories and competitive performances in bowl games. His commitment to player and culture development has been a cornerstone of his coaching philosophy throughout his distinguished career.
