Head Coach, Texas Tech University
Joey McGuire is the head coach of Texas Tech, a position he has held for five years. Before college football, he spent 23 years as a Texas high school coach, including stops at Crowley and Cedar Hill, crediting mentors Harris Brownlee, Tom McComb, Robert Woods, Sam Harrell, Mike Copeland, and D.W. Rutledge for shaping his career. He was elected to the THSCA board of directors in 2011 and later coached at Baylor under Matt Rhule before taking the Texas Tech job.
At Texas Tech, McGuire's staff includes 13 members with Texas high school coaching backgrounds, including his son Garret McGuire and assistant Kenny Perry. At the clinic, McGuire discussed leading the program through what he called a "black swan event" an unexpected, high-impact situation involving a Texas Tech player that drew national attention during the 2026 offseason. He described leaning on team captains Ben Roberts and Sheridan Wilson, staying honest with players and staff, holding firmly to the program's core values and "player/coaches oath," and repeatedly returning to the team's mantra of "what's next" to stay focused despite outside distraction.
McGuire referenced Texas Tech's 2025 Big 12 championship season, crediting quarterback Behren Morton and past Red Raiders quarterbacks Graham Harrell and Patrick Mahomes, and highlighted player Jacoby Williams as a key team leader during the offseason.
