Kevin McGiven completed his sixth season in 2023 with the San José State University football coaching staff, starting in February 2018. By 2023, he held the position of Spartans passing game coordinator/wide receivers’ coach, transitioning from his previous role as offensive coordinator. Under his leadership, the Spartans achieved significant success, winning 31 games and participating in three bowl games over four seasons, a marked improvement from their previous record of seven wins over three seasons.

In 2023, as offensive coordinator, McGiven's coaching contributed to the Spartans rushing for 150 yards or more in nine games and surpassing 100 yards in 11 games. Notably, they gained 313 rushing yards against No. 25 Fresno State, the highest since September 2016. Senior running back Kairee Robinson excelled with record-setting statistics, including 18 touchdowns (a new SJSU record), 1,127 rushing yards, and an average of 102.5 yards per game. Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro also stood out, earning All-Mountain West First Team honors and ranking highly in passing efficiency and touchdown passes.

In previous seasons, McGiven's coaching led to remarkable achievements such as leading the country in turnovers during the regular season in 2022 and winning the Mountain West Championship in 2020. His career highlights include developing top quarterbacks like Josh Love and Nick Starkel and coordinating successful passing offenses at various universities.

McGiven began his coaching career in 1998 at Louisiana Tech and has since accumulated 16 seasons of experience coaching quarterbacks and coordinating NCAA Division I offenses.
