Maurice Crum Jr.
Co-Defensive Coordinator, SMU

Maurice Crum Jr. enters his fourth season at SMU in 2026, having been promoted to defensive play caller after joining the Mustangs' staff in January 2023 as linebackers coach. His unit played a significant role in SMU's historic 2024 season, when the Mustangs advanced to their first College Football Playoff berth and went undefeated in ACC play, becoming the first team to finish 8-0 in conference play in its debut season moving from a Group of Five conference to a Power Four league. Under Crum, SMU's defense recorded 43 sacks in 2024, third most in program history, while ranking among the FBS's top 25 in defensive touchdowns, rushing defense, and interceptions. In 2025, the defense continued its opportunistic play, ranking in the top 25 nationally in turnovers gained, red zone defense, and interceptions, with linebackers Brandon Booker and Alexander Kilgore each recording over 60 tackles.

Before SMU, Crum spent one season at Ole Miss as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, helping the Rebels to an 8-5 record and a bowl appearance. He spent five seasons at Western Kentucky, including a year as defensive coordinator in 2021, when the Hilltoppers held opponents to 21 points or fewer in seven of their final eight games. He also coached at Indiana State, Kansas, and his alma mater, Notre Dame, where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.

A four-year letterman at Notre Dame (2005 to 2008), Crum appeared in 52 games, recording over 300 tackles, eight sacks, and three interceptions, and served as team captain in 2007 and 2008. He was named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football 40 Under 40 list in 2024.

Rickey Hunley Jr.
Co-Defensive Coordinator / Secondary, SMU

Rickey Hunley Jr. enters his fifth season at SMU in 2026, having been promoted to co-defensive coordinator after joining the Mustangs as pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach in December 2021. In 2025, Hunley's secondary ranked among the FBS's top 10 in red zone defense, interceptions, and defensive touchdowns, with SMU leading the ACC in passes intercepted (18). His cornerback room featured four players with 30 or more tackles, led by redshirt freshman William Nettles.

Hunley came to SMU after three seasons (2019 to 2021) as cornerbacks coach at Liberty under Scott Symons, helping the Flames reach their first bowl game in program history and win back-to-back bowl titles in 2019 and 2020. Liberty went 10-1 in 2020, finishing ranked 17th nationally, with a defense that ranked among the nation's best in total defense, passing yards allowed, and interceptions. Before Liberty, Hunley served as safeties coach and recruiting coordinator at Incarnate Word and spent time at West Georgia, Southwest Baptist, and Lindenwood earlier in his coaching career.

A Kansas City native, Hunley holds a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Drake University. He and his wife, Nakisha, have three children: Taylor, Raegan, and Kamyrn.
