Michael Waters, entering his sixth year on staff in 2024, joined the UMaine coaching staff in July 2019. Initially coaching tight ends for four years, Waters transitioned to leading the wide receiver unit. He was subsequently promoted to assistant special teams coordinator and pro liaison in the summer of 2022, advancing to the lead role as special teams coordinator in 2023. In March 2024, Waters was appointed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

During the 2022 season, Waters played a pivotal role in the development of tight end Shawn Bowman, who emerged as a top offensive performer in the CAA, earning All-CAA third team honors. Under Waters' guidance, Bowman achieved career-high statistics despite missing several games due to injury. Waters' coaching impact continued in prior seasons, contributing to the growth of players like Bowman and Steve Petrick, who earned selections to the CAA All-Conference Third Team.

Before joining UMaine, Waters served as an offensive assistant at Augustana University, where he played a significant role in the team's successful passing offense. He also contributed to Hawaii's bowl game achievements during his time as an offensive graduate assistant at the University of Hawaii. Waters began his coaching career as an offensive student assistant at the University of Nevada-Reno under head coach Brian Polian, showcasing his expertise in quarterback development and offensive strategy.
