Neal Renna is in his second season as the assistant coach and safeties coach for the University of Akron under head coach Joe Moorhead in 2023. Before joining Akron, Renna spent three seasons at Eastern Illinois, where he served as co-Special Teams Coordinator and safeties coach. During his tenure, the Panthers defense ranked ninth in the NCAA for passing yards allowed in 2021 and consistently performed well in total defense and turnovers gained. Renna's coaching efforts also resulted in notable individual performances, including Second-Team All-Conference nickel Jordan Vincent.

Renna's coaching career includes valuable experience at Missouri, where he worked as a defensive analyst and graduate assistant defensive line coach. He contributed to the development of Freshman All-Americans, All-SEC Defensive Linemen, and NFL first-round draft pick Charles Harris. Renna's earlier roles included positions as a recruiting assistant at Northwestern and a defensive backs coach at Kansas Wesleyan. A former football player at Heidelberg University, Renna earned Academic All-OAC Honors and completed his bachelor's degree in 2011. He holds master’s degrees from Kansas Wesleyan and Missouri and attended Officer Candidate School for the United States Navy in 2011.
