Nick Benedetto has been a successful position coach and defensive coordinator at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and NCAA Division II levels for the past nine years, joined the Northern Illinois University football staff as co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach in the spring of 2022.

In his first season as defensive coordinator, NIU almost doubled its turnovers forced from 2021 with 20 in 12 games in 2022. The Huskies went from a -6 turnover margin in 2021 to a +4. Four Huskies earned All-MAC honors on defense led by second-team selections in defensive tackle Devonte O'Malley and safety CJ Brown. Defensive End Michael Kennedy and defensive tackle James Ester were named to the third team.

He also served as the defensive coordinator for the Samford football team, where he made significant strides in his inaugural season. Under his guidance, the defense led the Southern Conference in turnovers caused, with 18 in total, including 10 fumbles and eight interceptions. His coaching efforts also resulted in four players from the defense earning All-SoCon honors, with safety Chris Edmonds receiving first-team All-American recognition.

Before his role at Samford, Benedetto served as the defensive coordinator at the University of Sioux Falls, his alma mater, for three seasons. During this time, his defenses consistently performed well, ranking among the top nationally in total defense and points allowed per game. Benedetto's coaching career is marked by a strong record of success and recognition, including being named one of the "Top 30 under 30" coaches in the country for his outstanding recruiting skills. He brings a wealth of playing experience as a former standout defensive back and captain for Sioux Falls, contributing to multiple national championship teams during his collegiate career.
