Run Action Tunnel Screens

by Jason Mohns
Run Action Tunnel Screens

Coach Mohns discusses his run action tunnel screens from the multiple spread offense. Coach dives into using the influence of guard pulls and outside zone actions to take advantage of aggressive defenses and create explosive plays in the screen game. The clinic is video narrated by Coach Mohns and includes rules for the wide receivers and linemen, as well as backfield action and coaching points.

The Coach

Head Coach Jason Mohns enters his 9th season at the helm of the Saguaro Football program, and 14th season overall with the Sabercats.

In eight seasons as head coach at Saguaro, Mohns has compiled a 97-12 record, including a state record six consecutive State Championship tiles. Coach Mohns was named the AIA Division III Coach of the Year in both 2013 and 2014. He was named the National Football Foundation Arizona Football Coach of the Year in 2015, the News Channel 12 Friday Night Fever Arizona Coach of the Year in 2016, and the Arizona Cardinals High School Football Coach of the Year in 2017. Coach Mohns was a finalist for the NFL’s Don Shula National Coach of the Year Award in 2017 and 2019. In 2018, Coach Mohns was named one of three recipients of the Innaugural Whataburger/MaxPreps Heart and Soul of the Game Award, for coaches who set an example of leadership to his team and in the community.

Exerpt from article written by Zach Barnett:

... Anyway, my goal here is to not to do the same with Jason Mohns. The head coach at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., is not Zion Williamson for a bunch of different reasons, starting with the fact that Zion has a much higher vertical. But it’s hard to listen to him speak, as I did at the Tony Franklin OC Magic clinic on Saturday, and not come away thinking he’s the next high school coach to make the jump to major college football. Don’t take my word for it, though. Texas offensive line coach Herb Hand, speaking after Mohns on Saturday, paused his own talk to heap praise on Mohns, sitting in the front row. “I’m so fired up for you, dude,” he said. “One day I hope I work for you. You’ve got it figured out, dude. If you’re going to overhaul your whole system, go do what he does. No wonder he scores 50 points a game.” Franklin praised Mohns with words I can’t print, because this is a family website.

Coach Mohns did an amazing job breaking down how he uses his run action screens, this is a great way to influence the defense with base run game and have an explosive screen built into it. He breaks it down so you can understand and adapt to any system, highly recommend to any coach looking to add a wrinkle / screen off run game.

Outstanding video to help protect your run game with perimeter screens. Simple rules for linemen and great video breakdowns.
