Matt Phipps is returning to the Butte College football program after spending the last six years as a coach and player at Bemidji State University.  While at Bemidji, Phipps coached both linebackers and running backs.  Phipps was also responsible for recruiting California, Illinois and Junior College athletes during his time in Bemidji.

In 2017, running back Andrew Lackowski was named to the 2017 NSIC North Division All-Conference First Team Offense under the coaching of Phipps.  The Beavers were ranked third in the conference in offensive rushing yards with an average 202.5 yards per game and 5.0 yards per play.  Under coach Phipps, senior running back Tahi Nomane finished his career sixth all-time at BSU with 2,371 rushing yards and tied for fifth all-time with 27 rushing touchdowns.

In 2016, Phipps helped guide the running game that geared the Beaver offense.  The Beavers led the NSIC in scoring with 45.6 points per game and were second with 523.8 yards per game which consisted of 230.2 rushing yards per game.  This helped the program to a 9-3 record on the season including the first post season victory in team history with a win in the Mineral Water Bowl.  Running back Gena Adams ran for the most yards by a Beavers running back since 2013.  He totaled 995 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns to go along with 215 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions.  Adams set a BSU single-season record with 7.4 yards per carry and averaged 90.5 rushing yards per game.  He was then named to the NSIC North Division All-Conference First Team Offense.  Off the field, the Beavers landed 24 student-athletes on the Fall Academic All-NSIC Team and Adams was named to the 2016 Academic All-America Division II football team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

In 2014, Phipps was a student assistant and outside linebackers coach at BSU before becoming the running backs coach in 2015.

During his playing career, Phipps spent two years at Butte Community College. where he was a two-time letterman at outside and inside linebacker and won two bowl games. After that he went to BSU where he was a two-year letterman at outside linebacker and led the team in special teams tackles in 2012. In 2013, Phipps started 8 games for BSU and accumulated 47 total tackles for the Beavers
