Shortpunter Unbalanced Single Wing -The Triple Spin Anatomyby Tom Lewis
An indepth look at the Triple Spin Series in our unbalanced single wing offense.
He was raised in Shelby, Ohio, where he played strong safety for the Northern Ohio League Championship Shelby Whippet football team in 1984. His love of the single wing offense dates back to his youth and was founded by the the stories and game film of his late father’s Shelby Whippets team and the single wing they ran. Shelby no longer runs the single wing but many in the area remember it. The old 16mm films of his father’s late 1950’s Shelby teams were the starting point of the development of his offensive schemes.
Shortly after college in 1991, he began his coaching career at Colonel Crawford High School as a varsity assistant. While at Colonel Crawford he won two North Central Conference league championships. He coached for Colonel Crawford until the 1997 season when he joined the staff at Shelby as the special teams coordinator. He returned to Colonel Crawford the following season as the offensive coordinator where he stayed until the 2000 season.
In 2001, he joined the staff at Plymouth High School in Plymouth Ohio as the defensive coordinator. In 2003, he became the head football coach for the Plymouth Big Red where he first implemented the single wing offense. After four years as head coach at Plymouth, he stepped down to spend more time with his family.
For the last few years, he has been an assistant coach for the Galion Tigers football team in Galion Ohio where he co-coordinates the offense and special teams. In 2011 Coach Lewis re joined the Plymouth staff as offensive coordinator and runs versions of spread , single wing and option offenses.
Coach Lewis was a presenter at the 2004 Single Wing Conclave Clinic in Wilkes Barre PA, and has developed numerous instructional DVDs on the single wing offense.
