Stopping the RPO with the Versatile 3-4 Defense
by Ricky Coon
Description
The Complete Versatile 3-4 System
This course breaks down how to effectively defend modern run-pass option (RPO) offenses using the versatile 3-4 defensive system. Coach Ricky Coon begins by clearly explaining the structure and intent behind RPO concepts, then builds a defensive framework designed to eliminate offensive advantages and create hesitation for quarterbacks.
You’ll learn how to apply multiple coverage strategies, including Cover 4, Cover 1, and match principles, all tailored to handle RPO reads and route combinations. The course also introduces key defensive calls such as the “Q” call, chase call, and simulated pressures, giving you tools to disrupt timing and control the flow of the offense.
In addition, Coach Coon details complementary concepts like trap coverage and hot coverage adjustments, helping you stay sound against quick throws while maintaining run integrity. Each component is presented within a cohesive system that emphasizes discipline, communication, and adaptability.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a clear and structured approach to neutralizing RPO-heavy offenses while maintaining the flexibility and aggressiveness of the 3-4 defense.
