Offenses across the country have developed their game and defenses are following steadily. The 3-4 is a defensive coordinators answers to offensive coordinators’ run pass option game that has taken over the game.

It effectively makes it difficult on the offensive line to execute their scheme. One of an offensive coordinator's main priorities is how to get the ball in the end zone the fastest, which is north and south. The goal of the 3-4 defense is to plug up the inside gaps and force offenses to run laterally before they get downhill.

There are many benefits of this formation. In a 3-4 line up, the B gaps are closed. The gaps that are open are the C gaps outside the offensive tackles. This allows Linebackers to have time to commit to stopping the downhill run thus taking them out of conflict. It also works with multiple coverages.
