Will Bryant - Counter Variations for Every Offense
by Texas High School Coaches Association
Description
Learn how to build an explosive counter run scheme from Coach Will Bryant, an offensive staff member at Texas State University. In this football coaching clinic, Bryant breaks down the small coaching details that turned the counter into one of Texas State's most explosive run plays, averaging 5.6 yards per carry with roughly 40 explosive gains (12+ yards) over the past three seasons.
You'll get a full breakdown of front-side "big" calls used to keep defensive ends off balance; how to gain an extra hat through motion, crack blocks, and formation variations; and a complete "plus one" quarterback run game package that creates numbers advantages in the run game without exposing a non-running quarterback to hits.
Perfect for offensive coordinators, run game coordinators, offensive line coaches, and tight ends coaches looking to install or refine a counter run scheme, add explosive run concepts to their offense, or build a more detailed teaching progression for gap scheme blocking.

Will Bryant
Tight Ends Coach, Texas State University
Will Bryant is a native of Amarillo, Texas, and a graduate of Texas Tech, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Sports Science. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at SMU (2015–2018), later working alongside current Texas State head coach GJ Kinne at SMU (2017) and Arkansas (2018), where Bryant served as senior offensive analyst through 2019. He also spent time as an offensive analyst at Auburn and UTSA in 2020.
Bryant transitioned to Texas high school football in 2021, serving as associate head coach, running backs coach, and recruiting coordinator at Allen High School, where he coached running back Jaylen Jenkins, now on Texas State's roster under Bryant once again. He then joined the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in 2022 as tight ends coach, helping the Cardinals reach the FCS playoff semifinals for the first time in program history, win a second consecutive Southland Conference championship, and field the nation's highest-scoring offense at both the FBS and FCS levels.
Bryant joined Texas State's coaching staff in December 2022 as tight ends coach. At a Texas high school football coaching clinic, he presented on counter run variations, detailing Texas State's approach to gap-scheme run blocking, tight end technique, and multiple ways to gain a numbers advantage in the run game. He shared that over a recent three-year span, Texas State gained roughly 1,900 yards on counter runs at an average of 5.6 yards per carry, with roughly one of every eight counter runs going for an explosive gain (12-plus yards).
