Wide Receiver Fundamentals & RPO’s
What are the fundamentals of a wide receiver?
There are three main components a player must nail and relentlessly practice. Route running, knowledge of the game and hand eye coordination. With the three, an aspiring wideout will find himself playing a different position. Route running’s purpose is to allow the quarterback to throw the ball farther to the receiver by creating space between them. Making good cuts and breaking down allow the receiver to do more.
A great receiver is able to find open spaces in the defense. Being knowledgeable of the game brings a huge asset to the quarterback. A wide receiver's job is to bring the playbook to life. Along with having an IQ, a wideout must have physical stamina, agility, strength and quickness in order to be effective.
There's no secret that the main duty of a wide receiver is to be able to catch passes. Having great hand eye coordination is a huge threat to any defense. The ability to jump up high or get low to make a catch is truly an asset to a coach and quarterback, having faith and trust in a receiver to make a play. Some of the games greatest receivers the game has ever seen never lacked hand eye coordination.
What are RPO’s?
RPO is the acronym for Run Pass Option. It presents a running back with the option of receiving the football or passing it to a wide receiver. The offensive line blocks as if it were the run play, which stresses the defense to either play the pass or the run. It is one of the most used and effective tactics in football today.

Holmon Wiggins was at Alabama and Nick Saban's staff as the Crimson Tide's wide receivers coach. Wiggins came to Tuscaloosa after three years coaching wide receivers at Virginia Tech. While at Virginia Tech, Wiggins oversaw the development of the Hokies' wide receivers for three years. Wiggins was part of a staff that helped guide Tech's offense to 10 single single-season records during their first year. He helped continue the ascent of Isaiah ford, who broke his own Tech single-season in 16'. Wiggins was an integral component of Fuente's staff that helped lead Memphis to back to back bowl appearances in 14'-15'.
