by TTCA Texas Tennis Coaches Association
Dylan Hester -Practice Breakdowns for Small Schools

Description

Running a tennis program at a small school comes with real challenges: athletes who play multiple sports, limited courts and coaches, tight practice windows, and the ongoing need to recruit and keep players engaged. In this course, Dylan Hester breaks down a practical, repeatable practice system built for the realities of a small-school program.

You’ll learn how Dylan structures practice from start to finish, including how he works with other coaches to support multi-sport athletes, how he builds buy-in with parents and the community, and how he keeps practices organized, competitive, and fun, even with court limitations.

This course goes beyond theory. Dylan shares the “how” behind what actually works day-to-day, including warmups, skill progressions, serve and return development, net movement concepts, and a set of competitive games that athletes love and coaches can run immediately.

Enroll now and take Dylan’s proven practice structure into your program, then start building a team that competes harder, improves faster, and has more fun doing it.

Lessons

The Coach

Dylan Hester is an educator and coach from Sonora who has been playing tennis since about age four. He attended Reagan County High School, where he competed for two state championships, finishing second his junior year and winning the title his senior year. He later attended Texas Tech University, earning an agricultural business degree.

Although he initially had no plans to become a teacher and coach, encouragement from a mentor led him to pursue an alternative certification. He returned to his hometown to teach and coach for his first year, an experience he describes as “crazy” and “a lot of fun,” including coaching alongside former high school coaches and competing against schools he once played.

He then moved to Sonora High School, served as an assistant coach for a year under Coach Larry Jennings, and later took over the program when Jennings retired. He is currently the head tennis coach, entering his fifth year in that role, and also coaches football as the offensive coordinator.
