Hey Coach,
I have a new playbook that I am putting out: UCONN Huskies Playbook
It's everything that Danny Hurley has run with the UCONN Huskies on their way to a National Championship this year.
The UCONN Huskies finished 31-8 and ranked third in offense for the season in the Ken Pom rankings.
This National Championship Playbook is very deep just like the UCONN Huskies team.
Here are three different ways that UCONN runs their offense
Danny Hurley believes that their set plays create their offense and I would have to totally agree.
We start off with one of UConn’s most used plays for Adama Sanogo in the post.
1. Here is a unique way to get a quick high-low set play.
The play starts with two players crisscrossing each other to opposite sides of the floor.
Sanago sets a slight pin down right for #3 Joey Calcaterra, and then immediately ducks in his man.
The goal of the play is go right inside to their big man; Sanogo off hi-low action with a wrinkle.
It's a very popular play to get the big man the ball in the middle third of the court.
2. Tons of Stagger Screens
UConn uses a lot of off-ball screening action in their offense, most notably for Jordan Hawkins and Joey Calcaterra.
In their transition offense, they almost always start their possessions with staggered screens.
They use a ton of sets that they get into if the stagger doesn't immediately get them a shot.
3. Fantastic Ball Movement & Player Movement in their set plays
They love to start out with a staggered screen on one side immediately followed by a staggered screen on the other side.
This is great action!
They disguise their set plays very well. Most of their stagger series is run off counters.
You will notice that the last two plays look very similar, but with different results.
Here is what you get with this Video Basketball Playbook!
The UConn Offense 2023-24: A Masterclass in Complexity and Efficiency
Danny Hurley took the reins of the UCONN Huskies Basketball program and his vision when beyond just winning. He wanted a TRANSFORMATION!
Look at how the 2023-24 season went and the UCONN Huskies transformed into one of the most complex & efficient offenses in college basketball.
When Coach Hurley came off his first National Championship in the 2022-23 season, He decided to tear up the playbook over the summer.
A very different move!
Why the Change?
Danny Hurley and Luke Murray knew that they couldn't rest on the 1st National championship.
Given scouting and how defensive schemes adapt over a year, they decided to rip it all up. Paranoia will do that.
Hurley tore up the old playbook and crafted an even deeper, more intricate offensive glossary—each term denoting a new play, alignment, or layered action.
How they cut, screen, and move gives the UCONN Huskies a definite unprecedented advantage on defenses every time that they hit the floor.
How They Changed the Offense for 2023-24
Danny Hurley's new offensive scheme featured on an off-ball screen heavy system with advanced European basketball concepts which put UCONN in a rare space.
With sets as intricate as “14 jet zoom pitch twin” (a sequence Hurley uses as an example), UConn layers screen after screen, cut after cut, leaving defenses in reactive chaos.
This constantly multi-layered moving style isn't just hard to defense. It's almost impossible to scout!
Take a typical possession: sharpshooter Cam Spencer starts the play with a pass and gets a chin screen, loops around, and sets a back screen for another player. Opponents scramble to keep up, and just when they think they’ve figured out the play, Spencer runs into a stagger screen, opening up a lane for a jumper. Each move builds on the previous one, creating an offense that’s more like a “choose-your-own-adventure” than a set play.
The Results: The Most Efficient Offense in College Basketball
What you have is an almost impossible to scout offense....
Position- less Movement: Players frequently cut, screen, and move, creating a fluid and versatile flow.
Off-Ball Screening as an Art Form: Each screen sets off a chain reaction, creating constant mismatches and opening scoring opportunities.
Pace and Precision: UCONN tries to use their patience in the back-court while striking fast in transition, making them in the top 10 in transition and half-court efficiency.
Intelligent Reads and Countermoves: In practice, UConn dedicates significant time to decision-making against different defensive schemes, especially switching defenses, which they counter with slips, false actions, and relentless off-ball movement.
Every component of this offense leads to shot selection that is among the smartest in college basketball.
UConn's ability to stretch defenses in both transition and set plays has transformed their offense into an unstoppable force.
The final proof?
The results in March Madness tell you everything! Double-digit wins across their last 11 NCAA games, as Coach Hurley and his team dismantle defenses, possess by possess.
As Coach Hurley’s reputation grows, so does the likelihood of a UConn dynasty built on offensive mastery.
