Elisha Thompson - Practice Organization & Habits of Successful Coaches
by THSCA Basketball
Description
Better practices start with a clear plan—and stronger programs grow through consistent habits.
In this course, Coach Elisha Thompson shares her approach to basketball practice organization, player development, and program leadership. Drawing on her experience as a coach and athletic administrator at La Porte, Thompson explains how to make the most of limited gym space, available staff, and practice time while keeping players active and engaged.
Thompson walks through everyday fundamentals, competitive shooting drills, finishing progressions, and transition activities that coaches can incorporate into their next practice. She explains how to set measurable goals, reduce standing around, and connect drill work to game situations.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Build timed practice plans with clear objectives and efficient transitions.
-
Organize JV and varsity workouts in a shared gym.
-
Incorporate dynamic warm-ups, defensive footwork, passing, and finishing under pressure.
-
Use shooting drills with specific targets to encourage focus and accountability.
-
Develop transition offense and defense through competitive, game-like situations.
-
Align junior high development with your high school program.
-
Strengthen staff teamwork, player relationships, and community involvement.
Beyond the drills, Thompson addresses the leadership habits that support long-term success: delegating responsibilities, adapting to your players, maintaining consistent expectations, and communicating effectively with parents.
Designed for junior high and high school basketball coaches, this course offers practical ideas for running more purposeful practices and building a program players want to be part of.
