The Coach

Conceptual Offense

Grant Leonard is the sixth head coach in Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball program history, having stepped into the role in the spring of 2022 after nearly a decade on staff. He originally joined the program in 2013 as an assistant coach and was elevated to associate head coach in 2016, giving him a long runway inside the culture before taking over as the top voice.

Since becoming head coach, Leonard has overseen a steady rise as Queens transitioned into NCAA Division I competition. The program reached the 15-win mark for nine consecutive seasons under his staff's build, then broke through with its first ASUN Tournament appearance in 2022-23 and a quarterfinal run in 2023-24. In 2024-25, Queens posted its first 20-win season at the Division I level, and the club followed that up in 2025-26 with a second straight 20-win campaign, an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship, and the program's first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance, where Queens faced #2-seeded Purdue.

Before Queens, Leonard spent time as head coach and general manager of Team D2 in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), advancing to at least the Round of 32 in all three seasons he ran the club. His earlier coaching stops included Paine College as first assistant and recruiting coordinator, along with assistant roles at Flagler College, the University of Texas-Pan American, and Washington College. As a player, Leonard competed at William Penn University in Iowa, where he earned Daktronics Academic All-Region honors twice and Midwest Classic Academic All-Conference recognition twice. He holds a bachelor's degree in psychology (cum laude) from William Penn and a master's degree in psychology from Washington College. Over a coaching career spanning about two decades, he has helped develop 33 players who went on to play professionally in the past 11 seasons.
