The Illawarra Hawks are known for having Lamelo Ball play for them this past season, but Coach Flinn and the Hawks are more than that. In this playbook it is the first of our series where it is more of a player personel playbook. A lot of these plays were designed for Lamelo Ball and if you have a tremendous PG that will have the ball in their hand alot, this playbook is for you!

‘Coach Flinny’, as he is more affectionally known, has been the Hawks’ Assistant Coach since 2007 under the guidance of Head Coaches including Eric Cooks, Gordie McLeod and, most recently, Rob Beveridge. The former Illawarra Hawks player has been a long-standing member of the Club, starting as a a towel boy in 1982 and quickly proved his talents on and off the court. He was an Illawarra Hawks Junior Multiple NSW Representative Player and captained the NSW under 20’s team in 1991. After two years as a Development Player for the Hawks, Flinn was named on the playing roster in 1992 and made the play-offs every year for the next three years. At the age of 25, Flinn turned his focus to coaching and became a PE Teacher and Head Basketball Coach at Illawarra Sports High School where he trained future NBL players including Tyson Demos, Dan Jackson and Kane Riley-Hendersen.
Hawks Owner, Simon Stratford said Flinn’s years of experience and dedication to the club made him the prime candidate. “Matt Flinn’s passion, dedication and drive to succeed is second to none and he deserves the opportunity to step up to this new challenge, “ he said. “Flinny has built a great rapport with the team through his role as Assistant Coach. A major focus for the Club has been on creating pathway opportunities for future players and it is fantastic that we can offer this to our Coaching Staff too.”
