John Dunne: Building an Elite Man-to-Man Defense - Principles & Drills
by New Jersey Basketball Coaches Association (NJBCA)
Description
Build a connected man-to-man defense that protects the paint, contests shooters, and limits easy baskets.
In this on-court clinic, John Dunne shares the defensive principles and practice progression behind his approach at Marist. Through live demonstrations, he shows how to establish defensive habits from the first day of practice, then build from individual positioning into coordinated team defense.
Dunne emphasizes early help, disciplined movement, and arriving on the catch—giving defenders a better chance to contain the ball without surrendering open perimeter shots.
In this course, you’ll learn:
-
Stance, closeouts, and first-step defense: Teach defenders to stay balanced, contest with a high hand, and keep the ball in front.
-
Help positioning and recovery: Establish gap responsibilities while staying connected to shooters and reacting to relocation.
-
Shell drill progressions: Use passing, cutting, and exchanges to reinforce positioning, communication, and movement.
-
Ball-screen coverage: Break down drop coverage, switching, pick-and-pop help, and blitz responsibilities.
-
Off-ball screen defense: Work through flare screens, wide pin downs, and staggered screens.
-
Emergency switches: Understand when and how to use veer switches when defenders lose contact with their assignments.
Throughout the session, Dunne explains the teaching cues, common mistakes, and corrections that make these drills effective. Coaches will leave with a practical progression for developing a disciplined defense and reinforcing its core habits throughout the season.
