In the offseason of 1992, Chuck Daly was transitioning from being the Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons to his new
job with the New Jersey Nets. The other bright spot of his summer was that he was named as the coach for the
United States Olympics Men’s Basketball Team nicknamed “The Dream Team.” In 1989, FIBA allowed NBA players
to participate in the Olympics. After the U.S. settled for a bronze medal in the 1988 Olympics (their worst finish
ever) with only college players, Team USA compiled the best players primarily in the NBA.

Featuring such NBA superstars as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley, The Dream
Team headed off to Barcelona. Daly’s coaching staff also included Lenny Wilkens, P.J. Carlesimo and Mike
Kryzewski. Defeating their opponents by an average of 44 points per contest, The Dream Team earned the gold
medal at the 1992 Olympics.

The NBA and Team USA couldn’t even imagine the long term impact of the Dream Team. Arguably the best
basketball team ever assembled, in 2010 The Dream Team was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
Fame. Eleven of the 12 players on the team and three of the four coaches on The Dream Team also were
individually elected to the Hall of Fame. Here are some of the Xs and Os that Daly utilized on the gold medal-winning Dream Team.
