The Coach
Phil Edwards is an elite field hockey coach, performance analyst, and coach educator with over 15 years of experience at the NCAA, international, and national team levels. He joined Rutgers University in 2022 as Technical Director, bringing a proven track record of success from both collegiate and international competition.
At Rutgers, Edwards has helped guide the Scarlet Knights to historic seasons, including multiple top-10 national rankings, victories over top-ranked opponents, record conference finishes, and the development of numerous All-Americans, All-Region, and Big Ten award winners.
Before Rutgers, Edwards served as Senior Manager of Coaching & Performance at USA Field Hockey, where he was named 2021 Coach Educator of the Year by Team USA. He worked with the U.S. Women’s National Team, U-21 National Team, and Junior High Performance programs, specializing in goalkeeping development, performance analysis, and tactical coaching. He also coached with the U.S. Men’s National Team at the Pan American Games.
His collegiate coaching career includes assistant and associate head coaching roles at Boston College and Indiana University, as well as early development work with the WC Eagles Field Hockey Club and the England Hockey Board.
A graduate of Loughborough University, Edwards is a former England U18 player and multi-time British University and European Indoor Champion. He holds a master’s degree in sport science from Nottingham Trent University with a specialty in performance analysis and skill acquisition, and advanced coaching qualifications from England Hockey, USA Field Hockey, and the International Society of Performance Analysis. He is also the founder of Path Coaching Company, dedicated to coach education and player development.
