Blake Gideon | Safeties Coach | Texas

Blake Gideon, an All-Big 12 defensive back at Texas and seasoned special teams coordinator was appointed safeties coach for the Longhorns on January 22, 2021. His impact was evident in the 2023 season with the consistent performance of veteran Jerrin Thompson, the emergence of former walk-on Michael Taaffe, true freshman Derek Williams Jr., and transfer Jalen Catalon. Thompson and Taaffe led the team with three interceptions each, while Williams recorded 42 tackles. In 2022, defensive backs Jahdae Barron, Jerrin Thompson, and veteran Anthony Cook had standout seasons, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. Gideon returned to Texas after serving as special teams coordinator at Ole Miss in 2020, where he helped the Rebels rank highly in kickoff return defense and kickoff returns, and saw punter Mac Brown achieve significant success.

Before Ole Miss, Gideon was the special teams coordinator and nickelbacks coach at Houston, where his unit led the nation in blocked punts and kicks. Punter Dane Roy, under Gideon's guidance, was a finalist for the 2019 Ray Guy Award. Gideon's coaching journey included roles as cornerbacks coach at Georgia State, defensive backs coach at Western Carolina, and positions at Florida and Auburn. A former NFL player, Gideon had a notable playing career at Texas, starting all 52 games at safety, earning four-time honorable mention All-Big 12 honors, and serving as a two-time team captain. He posted impressive career stats and was academically accomplished, graduating with a degree in kinesiology and health.
