Building A Violent Run Attack: Techs, Drills & Strategies - Matt Drinkall

Description

In this high-impact clinic, CMU Head Coach Coach Matt Drinkall delivers a masterclass on developing a run game rooted in physical dominance and relentless execution. Drawing from his unique perspective shaped by service academy football, Drinkall presents a detailed system that emphasizes posture, pacing, and power to build a truly violent ground attack.

From the foundational phases—Cover, Cripple, and Control—to the nuanced understanding of leverage by level, coaches will gain a practical and adaptable approach to instilling physicality in every rep. Drinkall dives into the "Life of Leverage", a philosophy that translates into teachable, repeatable techniques across every position group.

This course blends mindset with mechanics. You'll get core drills that reinforce technique, strategies for maintaining leverage within scheme, and insight into how to take “old things” and see them with a fresh perspective. It culminates with an honest discussion on coaching self-reflection and how to instill a mindset of violence that becomes the backbone of your run game.

Whether you're looking to revamp your current run philosophy or elevate an already physical offense, this course equips you with the drills, strategies, and mentality to build a violent, controlling ground attack.

Lessons

The Coach

Matt Drinkall was named head coach at Central Michigan following a six-year tenure at Army West Point, where he served as offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator under Jeff Monken. In 2024, Drinkall helped lead Army to an 11-1 record, an AAC championship, a No. 22 national ranking, and an Independence Bowl berth. Army led the nation in rushing (314.4 ypg), time of possession, and finished top-5 nationally in third down conversions. His offensive line unit was a Joe Moore Award finalist, and he was named 2024 FootballScoop Offensive Line Coach of the Year.

Drinkall played a key role in Army’s offensive transition from a flexbone to a multiple power-rushing attack, helping produce top-10 national rushing offenses in multiple seasons. He also coached tight ends and quarterbacks during his time at West Point.

Prior to Army, Drinkall was the head coach at Kansas Wesleyan, where he led the program to a 42-17 record over five seasons, including a 13-1 campaign in 2018 and a national semifinal appearance. That year, KWU averaged 54.3 points and 530.8 yards per game. He also served as OC at St. Ambrose and began his career at Western Illinois under Don Patterson.
