Counter Option in a Modern Spread Offense
by Southern California Football Coaches AssociationDescription
Running a counter option in a spread offense
What is a Counter Option?
Counter options are used when a backside defensive player, particularly linebackers, are repeatedly making tackles on a running back. If this happens, it usually indicates the opposing team does not help the linebacker on the backside. Power and counter plays are similar. Under a power play, the half back flankers out the first defender outside of the tackle. If it's a counter play, the backside guard pulls back and knocks out the first defender outside of the tackle.
An option is an offensive scheme in which it allows the quarterback to have different looks or multiple options. Depending on the actions and reactions of the defense.
What's a Counter Trap?
It's a very rapid and misleading play. A defensive lineman will be temporarily unlocked as part of the play design in order to block a linebacker more quickly. A backside guard kickout blocks that unblocked the defensive lineman after pulling play side.
The difference between trap and counter?
A trap play involves pulling linemen and is aggressive and quick hitting. Trap blocks are used instead of power and counters to target interior defenders instead. The trap hits fast, and the running back needs to run down the middle of the defense with a narrow lane to escape.
