Dennis Springer - Northwestern WR Development

Description

Developing receivers should be a never-ending job, especially now that coaches often run multiple offenses such as the spread offense, the RPO, Wing-T, and more. Different offensive styles ask wide receivers to carry out different tasks. Depending on how you plan to use wide receivers, you must develop them differently. Different receivers require different training, inside receivers perform slightly differently than wideouts.

There are many areas you can focus on as far as developing them and making them better every day. Starting with their stance, pop off, and route running. Followed by catching drills, their ability to read the defense and block when necessary.

In this course, Coach Dennis Springer discusses the goals that he and his receivers set in place. How to progress and develop with fundamentals and a drill menu that he incorporates into his practices to help improve his wide receivers.

The Coach

Coach Dennis Springer is the Assistant Coach (Wide Receivers) at Northwestern University. He came to NU after spending the previous three seasons at Indiana University, serving as the assistant head coach and running backs coach, as well as the Hoosiers' co-special teams coordinator. Springer watched over a well-rounded receiving corps that ranked third in the Big Ten in 2018 with 3352 yards.  He has also coached one of the most productive wide receivers in Wildcat history.

Springer also oversaw the development of several young pass-catchers. First-year J.J. Jefferson appeared in 12 games and scored two touchdowns. Had career-best games in wins over Michigan State and Minnesota. Sophomore Kyric McGowan got time in 13 games in 2018, scoring two touchdowns and averaging over 20 yards per catch.
