Drop Back Pass Game Featuring Y Cross

Description

The Complete Idaho Offense Series --->

This course delivers an in-depth breakdown of the Idaho drop back pass game, centered around the highly versatile Y-Cross concept. Guided by Coach Luke Schleusner’s structured and detail-oriented approach, it explores how to build an efficient and adaptable passing attack rooted in strong fundamentals and clear offensive philosophy.

The course begins by outlining key principles of the pass game and how they integrate into a cohesive drop back system. From there, it dives into extensive film analysis and concept installation, highlighting how Y-Cross can be expanded through multiple formations and complementary route combinations. Concepts such as Smash variations, Drive, Out-to-Go, and deep route integrations are examined to show how they work together to stress defenses and create consistent passing opportunities.

Emphasis is placed on timing, spacing, and quarterback decision-making, ensuring each concept is executed with precision. By combining scheme design with practical application, this course provides a clear framework for developing a dynamic passing game that maximizes efficiency and creates explosive plays through well-structured progression reads and route synergy.

The Coach

Luke Schleusner | Offensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks Coach, University of New Mexico

Luke Schleusner is the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at the University of New Mexico, bringing more than two decades of college coaching experience and a track record of developing productive, adaptable offenses.

Before joining New Mexico in December 2024, Schleusner coordinated Idaho’s offense for three seasons, helping the Vandals reach the FCS playoffs each year, including consecutive quarterfinal appearances in 2023 and 2024. His 2024 offense produced 2,238 rushing yards, featured three running backs with more than 500 yards, and ranked 19th nationally in passing efficiency despite losing its starting quarterback in the season opener.

Schleusner previously spent eight seasons at South Dakota State, coaching tight ends and later serving as Passing Game Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach. During that stretch, the Jackrabbits made eight consecutive FCS playoff appearances and reached the national championship game following the 2020 season.

In his first season at New Mexico, Schleusner helped quarterback Jack Layne set the school’s single-season completion percentage record at 65.1%. His experience across quarterbacks, receivers, and tight ends gives coaches a broad perspective on offensive development, passing-game execution, and adapting a system to its personnel.
