Unlocking the potential of your players is crucial to the success of your team. In this course, Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule shares his experience, strategies, and three essential rules for building a strong coaching staff and team. By focusing on the top 10% of your team and recognizing them publicly, you can elevate the entire team's standards – a priceless insight for any coach in any sport!
Coaching the Top 10%
A Gallup study reveals three groups of workers: engaged, not engaged, and actively disengaged. Coach Rhule stresses the importance of coaching the top 10% of your team, as recognizing and talking about them publicly will help the middle 80% shift towards them. This will raise the standards of the team as a whole, and by continuing to focus on the top performers, you can create a culture of excellence and high performance.
Building a Successful Coaching Staff
Coach Rhule shares his three rules for staff: do what you're asked, protect the staff, and put the players first. To create a team of staff members that are engaged, productive, and successful, Coach Rhule explains weekly one-on-one player interactions, weekly player position group training table meals, a semester position bonding trip, weekly academic follow-ups, and weekly goal-setting sessions.
He also emphasizes the importance of introducing yourself to the parents and having a position manual. By following these rules and guidelines, you can build a coaching staff that is dedicated to the success of the team and the individual growth of each player.
By focusing on the top 10% of your team and building a strong coaching staff, you can elevate your team's performance and create a culture of excellence. Take advantage of this resource available to you and learn from Coach Matt Rhule to take your team to the next level.

The Coach
Matt Rhule is the head coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Rhule has made a name for himself in the world of college football with his impressive coaching abilities and strong leadership skills.
Rhule began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Penn State University in 1998, working under legendary coach Joe Paterno. He quickly climbed the ranks, taking on various coaching positions at several universities, including Temple, Western Carolina, UCLA, and the New York Giants in the NFL.
However, it was during his tenure as the head coach at Temple University that Rhule truly made his mark. From 2013 to 2016, he transformed the Temple Owls football program, leading the team to unprecedented success. Under his guidance, the Owls won the American Athletic Conference (AAC) championship in 2016 and earned their first-ever back-to-back bowl game appearances.
Rhule's exceptional coaching skills did not go unnoticed, and in 2017, he was appointed as the head coach of the Baylor Bears. Taking over a program that was struggling to rebuild, Rhule worked his magic once again. He successfully turned around the team's fortunes, leading the Bears to an impressive 11-3 record in 2019 and an appearance in the Big 12 Championship game.
Known for his attention to detail, strategic approach, and ability to develop players, Rhule has gained a reputation as an excellent motivator and mentor. His emphasis on discipline, hard work, and character-building has not only translated into on-field success but has also earned him the respect and admiration of his players and coaching staff.
In 2023, Rhule accepted the head coaching position at the University of Nebraska, where he hopes to continue his winning ways and lead the Cornhuskers to prominence. With his proven track record and dedication to building strong football programs, Matt Rhule is poised to make a significant impact on the future of Nebraska football.
