The Coach
Gary McGraw
Cornerbacks Coach, Sam Houston State
Gary McGraw returned to Sam Houston State in January 2025 for his second stint coaching cornerbacks, rejoining the program under head coach Phil Longo after stops at Tulsa and Southern Illinois. He originally coached at Sam Houston from 2016 to 2021, a tenure that included the program's 2020 FCS National Championship season. He brings more than 20 seasons of collegiate coaching experience to the role.
During his first stint at Sam Houston, McGraw served as cornerbacks coach, defensive passing game coordinator, and special teams coordinator, helping the Bearkats compile a 58 and 14 record, win three conference titles, and reach the FCS playoffs four times, capped by a perfect 10 and 0 national championship season in 2020. He developed two of the program's most accomplished defensive backs, four time All American Zyon McCollum, a fifth-round NFL Draft pick, and three-time all conference honoree Jaylen Thomas. Before Sam Houston, McGraw spent five seasons as defensive secondary coach and special teams assistant at Midwestern State, where he coached six All Americans and helped the program win three Lone Star Conference titles. He later spent time coaching cornerbacks at Tulsa before a stint at Southern Illinois, prior to his return to Huntsville.
A veteran of extensive Texas high school recruiting throughout his career, McGraw has built a reputation for developing defensive back technique and creating structured, detail oriented player development systems throughout his tenure in the college ranks.
