Joe Klanderman
Defensive Coordinator / Safeties Coach, Baylor University

Joe Klanderman is in his first season as Baylor's defensive coordinator, announced in the role on December 11, 2025, under head coach Dave Aranda. He arrives after seven total seasons at Kansas State, the final six as defensive coordinator (2020-25), following a year as safeties coach in 2019. Under his leadership, Kansas State led the nation in third-down defense in his debut season and helped the Wildcats win the 2022 Big 12 Championship, a title run built on one of the nation's most opportunistic defenses that ranked top-30 nationally in interceptions, turnovers gained, scoring defense, and third-down defense. That 2022 unit produced first-team All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Over his six seasons running the Kansas State defense, 47 Wildcats earned All-Conference honors and eight went on to be selected in the NFL Draft, including Julius Brents, Josh Hayes, Wyatt Hubert, and Russ Yeast. His defenses ranked in the nation's top 30 in defensive efficiency in each of his final five seasons.

Before Kansas State, Klanderman spent five seasons (2014-18) as defensive backs coach at North Dakota State, helping the Bison win four FCS national championships, with his units finishing in the top five nationally in scoring defense in all five seasons. He began his college coaching career at his alma mater, Minnesota State, spending 12 seasons on staff, including seven as defensive coordinator, and helped the Mavericks produce 26 first-team All-Conference selections and 10 All-Americans.

A native of Hammond, Wisconsin, Klanderman was a four-year letterman on the defensive line at Minnesota State and holds both bachelor's (2001) and master's (2004) degrees from the university. He and his wife, Amanda, have four children: Elle, Corryn, Jarrett, and James.
